How To Deal With Overwhelm The Easy Way

One of the most common feelings people get when running an online business is overwhelm.

There is so much information being thrown at you, so many people telling you how you should be doing things and so many different tools to do it all with.

You can spend your day, looking at different articles, down loading free this free that signing up to all sorts of different tools and applications all to make life easier.

You look at what others are doing and worry that you’re not doing enough, forgetting that they have probably been doing it for years and you haven’t

All that happens is you achieve nothing and end up even more confused and overwhelmed than when you started.

When I first started online I was in a perpetual state of overwhelm.

However, I have learned what to do about it.  Don’t get me wrong I still suffer from overwhelm from time to time but I find ways of dealing with it and I’ve put together my top 10 tips for dealing with overwhelm.

1. Take a Step Back and Breathe.

If you are stressed you will not achieve anything

2. Set Goals

Where do you want your business to be in 12 months?  What is the most important thing to do right now to get you to your goal.  Don’t over complicate it, pick 3 goals for 12 months; you can add another one later if you achieve them,

3. Set Up A To-Do List

Make sure it is in the one place, whether that is on your computer, phone or in a notebook but keep it in the one place. When ideas come to you put them on the list. To do lists in themselves can cause overwhelm as they can be massive, but prioritise them into the top three things you must do on a daily basis and then deal with the rest when you have completed the top 3.  To help you prioritise as yourself this question.  If I had limited time to spend on my business in the next month what would be the most important things to do to keep it running.

4. Focus

Choose one task at a time and focus solely on it until it is complete.  Stop multitasking it doesn’t work.

5. Tidy Up Your Computer

Set up a filing system that works for you and you can easily find files you need.

6. De Clutter

For many when there are too many things in their field of vision it can be difficult for the brain to concentrate on the task in hand.

7. Create A Schedule And Block time Off For Different Tasks

The brain works better when completing one task at a time as jumping back and forth disrupts your concentration.

8. Use A Timer To Keep To Your Schedule

I use the windows alarm on my computer but there are many others available.  Find one that suits you.

9. Know How Long A Task Takes

I consistently get this wrong, so if I block out 30 minutes to do a task I automatically double it.  If I finish early I can move on to the next task.

10. Give Yourself A Break

Take regular breaks every hour, move,  stretch and if you are struggling with something take a walk, or listen to music .  Get away from your computer,  I often find when I am trying to figure something out the answer will come when I am out walking.

These are simple steps that you can start using today.    If you do them regularly you will become much more productive in a shorter space of time.  Your sense of achievement will increase and your stress levels will decrease.  As with anything in life, it’s not what happens to you but how you deal with it that’s important.
