It’s True Money Doesn’t Make You Happy – So What Does?

It’s an age old question, does money make you happy?

I remember years ago when I was working in Turkey meeting the family of a friend of mine, who lived in a small village.  They lived what I would describe as a very basic life.  They had none of the trappings that we are used to in the West.  The thing that struck me the most was how happy and content they all were.  That feeling has stayed with me for over 30 years. Their life was about working the land and having good relations with their family friends and community and their generosity was humbling.  It was a simple way of life.

I have also met people who are extremely wealthy and they are unhappy and stressed. They are terrified of losing it all and spend their time preserving what they have.  They have become very self-centred.

So how do you find happiness?

4 Steps to True Happiness

Have daily quiet time

All the people who I have met in life who have found purpose, happiness and contentment spend time daily having quiet time, me time.  Some practice meditation and over the past few years, researchers at the University of Wisconsin working with Tibetan monks reported “What we found is that the longtime practitioners showed brain activation on a scale we have never seen before,” said Richard Davidson, a neuroscientist at the university’s new $10 million W.M. Keck Laboratory for Functional Brain Imaging and Behavior. “Their mental practice is having an effect on the brain in the same way golf or tennis practice will enhance performance.” It demonstrates, he said, that the brain is capable of being trained and physically modified in ways few people can imagine. Proof that re-progamming the brain is possible.

Work on your own terms

In a recent study, whose who have their own businesses were much happier than even those in highly paid occupations. The 2016 MBO Partners State of Independence study reports that 81 percent of independent workers report being happier since they became independent and 60 report being healthier,”

Having control over our daily lives, what we do, running our own shedules and choosing to do what we enjoy – .  When you have your own business and hit a challenge taking time out to meditate or go for a walk is a great way help find a solution.  You can’t do that when employed.

Find your flow (being in the zone)

Professor Mihaly Csikszentimihalyi recognised and named the psychological concept of flow, a highly focused mental state. Happiness is not a fixed state but can be developed as we learn to achieve flow in our lives. Flow is finding the balance between anxiety where the difficulty is to high for a persons skill and boredom where the difficulty is too low.

  • Each step has clear goals
  • Feedback to ones actions is immediate
  • There is a balance between challenges and skills.
  • Action and awareness become one
  • All distractions are removed from ones mind
  • Failure is not a worry
  • Self-consciousness disappears.
  • One loses their sense of time

Spend time with friends

Spending time with friends can decrease your stress and according to Karyn Hall, Ph.D., director to the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Centre in Houston Texas, friends can also be the first step to feeling a part of something bigger. She wrote in a recent Physchology Today blog “ A sense of belonging to a greater community improves your motivation, health and happiness. When you see your connection to others, you know that all people struggle and have difficult times.  You are not alone.

To summaries, meditation, working at something you enjoy, learning, challenging yourself and mixing with friends are the key to sustainable happiness,  once you have that money can enhance it, money without any of those things is unlikely to bring you lasting happiness.

For me I am finding happiness in building my online business, its something I enjoy, I am learning new skills all the time and challenging myself, I have started meditating have made friends with other members of the organisation that is teaching me the skills and mindset needed to be successful online
